Volleyball Sweeps Calumet College on Halloween Night Thursday

Whiting, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's volleyball team swept their rival Calumet College of St. Joseph on Halloween Night at the Rittenmeyer Center, 3-0, Thursday. The scores were 25-8. 25-14, 25-10. 

The RedHawks hit .475 for the match which was a season high.

IUN led 9-2 in the early portion of the opening set after a kill by Maddie Maatman (Beecher, Ill./Illiana Christian). The RedHawks led 14-5 midway through the first set then scored seven unanswered capped off by a kill by Mary Markusic (Munster, Ind./Bishop Noll) to make it 21-5.

CCSJ led 3-1 early in the second set before IUN went on a 7-3 run capped off by a kill by De Jesus off the pass from Hannah Starcevich (Highland, Ind.) which made it 8-6. IUN went on another run, going 9-5 which was capped off by a kill by Emileishka De Jesus (Hobart, Ind./Portage) to give the RedHawks a 16-10 lead.

The RedHawks started another run started off by a kill by Erica Kik (Griffith, Ind.) then was able to outscore the Crimson Wave 7-3 after Bella Kuechenberg (Lowell, Ind./Bishop Noll) picked up a kill for a 23-13 advantage. Robyn Griffin (Downers Grove, Ill./Lisle Senior) captured the second set for IUN after picking up the kill as the RedHawks won 25-14.

Both teams were tied 4-4 in the third set. IUN scored the next five points which was capped off by a service ace by Alyssa Melendez (Portage, Ind./Portage) for a 9-4 advantage.

With IUN leading 9-5, the RedHawks scored the next six points in row. With IUN leading 20-9, the RedHawks scored back-to-back points after a service ace by Joslihn Corradino (Portage, Ind./Portage) and a kill by Kila Stoudt (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) made it 22-9.

IUN was able to close out the match with back-to-back service aces by De Jesus. 

De Jesus led the RedHawks on the attack after picking up 10 kills will having a .692 attack percentage. Maatman helped the attack throughout the whole match, recording 23 assists. 

Kik had six kills on a .667 attack percentage. Griffin recorded five kills with a .571 attack percentage.

Alwine paved the way for the defense with 14 digs. Markusic had seven kills with a .700 attack percentage. 

IUN returns to action Saturday, November 2 as the RedHawks travel for their final road regular season match starting at 1 p.m. CT. With a victory on Saturday, IUN will capture a spot in the CCAC Tournament which begins Tuesday, November 12.
