Box Score Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's volleyball team picked up a non-conference victory against St. Mary of the Woods College, 3-1, Saturday. The RedHawks (12-6) defeated the Pomeroys (8-14) were 25-13, 25-13, 24-26, 25-17 at the Savannah Center.
In the first set both teams were tied 4-4 in the early going. Erica Kik (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) broke the tie and gave the RedHawks the lead after a kill.
With IUN leading 9-7, the RedHawks were starting to pull away after scoring the next four points after a service ace and a kill by Bella Kuechenberg (Lowell, Ind./Bishop Noll) made it 13-7. IUN outscored SMWC 12-6 the rest of the way to win the set 25-13.
The second set started out heavily in Indiana Northwest's favor with the RedHawks leading 6-0 after three service aces by Cara Nebel (Portage, Ind./Portage) and a kill by Mary Markusic (Munster, Ind./Bishop Noll). IUN was pulling away after Robyn Griffin (Downers Grove, Ill./Lisle Senior) recorded back-to-back kills to put the RedHawks ahead 14-5.
SMWC tried to make a late push towards the end of the set scoring four points in a row but it ended the exact score from the first set, 25-13.
St. Mary of the Woods was facing elimination in the third set and looked to stay alive. Both teams went back-and-forth before IUN went ahead 14-11.
The Pomeroys made a 7-1 run to gain their biggest lead of the match to go ahead 18-15. The RedHawks fought back after Joslihn Corradino (Portage, Ind./Portage) recorded a service ace to tie at 20-all.
Both teams started to go back and forth the next few points including a block by Kila Stoudt (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) and Markusic. With the score tied 24-all, SMWC scored the next two points and won the third set 26-24 to stay alive in the match.
IUN was ahead 2-1 going into the fourth set. SMWC was ahead 9-7 early in the fourth set.
The RedHawks scored five points in a row capped off by a kill by De Jesus to go ahead 12-9. IUN went ahead 15-14 then scored four in a row after a block by Markusic and Griffin to go ahead 19-14.
IUN scored the last four points of the match to win the fourth set, 25-17.
De Jesus led the RedHawks on the attack with 18 kills. Kuechenberg had a double-double 16 kills and 11 digs.
Kik also had a huge match on the attack, recording 11 kills. Nebel helped set up those attacks with 25 assists.
Maatman had 23 assists that led to points. On defense. Alwine had a busy night recording 26 digs.
IUN returns to action Tuesday, October 22 for a huge Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference match as the RedHawks travel to Olivet Nazarene to take on the Tigers starting at 7 p.m. CT.
