CHICAGO — Indiana University Northwest freshman forward Maya Maldonado (Hammond, Ind.) and senior defender Gianna Witte (Crown Point, Ind.) have been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Soccer Players of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Maldonado earned CCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording four goals and one assist for nine points in two RedHawk victories. The freshman opened the week with a two-goal performance and an assist in IUN's 4-0 win over Viterbo University last Wednesday.
She followed with another two-goal effort Saturday, helping Indiana Northwest secure a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross College. Maldonado's four goals across the two matches helped the RedHawks extend their winning streak to eight games.
Witte received CCAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition for her contributions to the RedHawks' back line, helping IUN record consecutive shutouts and extend its scoreless streak to three matches. The senior defender helped limit both opponents to four shots on goal while providing additional offensive support with two assists in the victory over Viterbo.
The two shutouts brought Indiana Northwest's season total to eight clean sheets as the RedHawks continued their strong defensive play down the stretch.
With the two victories, IUN improved to 12-4-1 overall and 8-1 in CCAC play, maintaining second place in the conference standings. The RedHawks have now won eight consecutive matches.
