EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — Indiana University Northwest men's soccer fought to the final whistle but came up short in a 2-1 setback to Taylor University on Wednesday afternoon at East Chicago Central High School.
The RedHawks (1-3-0) trailed 2-0 midway through the second half before junior Isaac Macias delivered his first goal of the season in the 81st minute, with an assist from Kyle Scott, that energized the home crowd. Despite several late pushes, Indiana Northwest couldn't find the equalizer.
Taylor (3-1-0) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 66th minute when Luka Gole converted off a feed from Josh Byrd. Less than a minute later, the Trojans doubled their lead as Giulio Mapessa finished a combination set up by Byrd and Justin Devlin.
Goalkeeper Devun Collins kept the RedHawks in the match with an outstanding performance, recording 11 saves while facing 18 shots. IU Northwest generated 10 shots of its own, with Macias, Scott, Luis Limones and Cesar Lopez testing the Taylor back line.
The RedHawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Columbus, Indiana, for a 2 p.m. kickoff against IU Columbus.
