INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University Northwest men's soccer opened its 2025 season with an early highlight but ultimately fell 2-1 to No. 21 Marian (Ind.) on Thursday evening.
The RedHawks (0-1) found the breakthrough in the 11th minute when junior midfielder Gavin Niebel netted his first goal of the year off an assist from Ian Gunderson. The finish marked IU Northwest's first goal of the season and briefly put the RedHawks ahead 1-0.
Marian (1-0) quickly answered as Foslyn Grant struck twice in less than two minutes. He first connected in the 17th minute off a pass from Rafael Zambrano, then followed with an unassisted effort in the 19th to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage they would hold the rest of the way.
Goalkeeper Devun Collins anchored the RedHawks defensively with five saves against 14 Marian shots. IUN generated three shots on the night, including two on target from Niebel, but could not break through in the second half despite holding the Knights scoreless over the final 70 minutes.
IU Northwest returns home on Wednesday, Aug. 27, to host Grace Christian University at 7 p.m. in East Chicago, Ind. For more information on ticketing, visit HERE.
