GARY, Ind. - In a thrilling and tightly contested CCAC Tournament Quarterfinals matchup, Governors State pulled off a 104-101 overtime victory over Indiana Northwest. The 7-seed team fought back from a halftime deficit to force overtime and ultimately secured the win in a high-scoring affair.
Indiana Northwest led by 6 points at halftime, holding a 53-47 advantage, thanks to strong performances from Trace Williams (27 points) and Dannie Smith (24 points). However, Governors State came out firing in the second half, led by Javon Johnson's 28 points and Vincent Davis' 24 points, keeping the game close throughout.
With the game tied at 94-94 at the end of regulation, Governors State's 11-point performance in the overtime period proved to be the difference. Johnson, who also recorded 8 rebounds and 2 assists, played a pivotal role in the extra session.
Despite the loss, Indiana Northwest fought hard with significant contributions from Williams, Smith, and Caleb Jenkins, who finished with 20 points. However, costly turnovers and a drop in shooting efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc, hurt the RedHawks as they managed just 0% from three-point range in overtime.
This loss means Indiana Northwest, as the 2-seed, now awaits to see if they will receive an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament.
With the CCAC Tournament behind them, the RedHawks will keep their eyes on the selection announcement for the national tournament and continue their pursuit of postseason glory.
