Indiana Northwest Edged 1-0 in Road Battle at Saint Xavier

Presented by IU School of Medicine

CHICAGO — Indiana University Northwest men's soccer went toe-to-toe with one of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's top teams but fell just short in a 1-0 defeat to Saint Xavier University Saturday night at Deaton Field.

The RedHawks (1-11-1, 0-4-1 CCAC) battled through 90 minutes of physical play, holding the Cougars (9-3-2, 4-1-1 CCAC) scoreless until a 73rd-minute penalty kick proved to be the difference. Senior goalkeeper Devun Collins continued his strong season with five saves, including several key stops early to keep the match level.

IU Northwest produced 10 total shots, six on target, and nearly broke through in the second half. Cesar Lopez tested the keeper in the 47th minute, followed by quality looks from Alan Nunez, Gavin Niebel, and Tristyn Kososkie as the RedHawks pushed for an equalizer. Defenders Tye Adams and Nick Flores anchored a disciplined back line that limited Saint Xavier's chances in the run of play.

Despite a late surge and four corner kicks, the RedHawks couldn't find the back of the net. Collins' efforts in goal kept IU Northwest within striking distance until the final whistle.

The RedHawks return home Friday, Oct. 18, to host Saint Ambrose University at 3:30 p.m. at East Chicago Central High School.
