CROWN POINT, Ind. - Indiana University Northwest's women's soccer hosted Saint Xavier University Friday in each team's first conference game of the season. Both teams finished their non-conference schedule with a .500 record, as the RedHawks went 3-3-1 and the Cougars went 2-2-1.
The RedHawks had a strong first half, highlighted by a goal from a corner kick by sophomore forward
Zoey Wells, who found the head of substitute senior defender
Jocelyn Chang-Stroman. Chang-Stroman buried it in the back of the net to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The RedHawks would take the one goal lead into halftime.
The Cougars had a prime opportunity in the second half to equalize as junior forward Hope Lewis played a pass to senior forward Louisa Schreiber, who got in behind the RedHawk defense. Schreiber took a touch around junior goalkeeper
Isabel Escalera and attempted a shot, but junior forward
Nora Loebbert was able to clear the ball for the RedHawk defense.
Hope Lewis had another opportunity to score for the Cougars as she received a ball at the top of the 18-yard box but sent the ball over the crossbar. Despite a few key chances to score, the Cougars came up empty. The lone goal from Chang-Stroman was enough for IUN to hang on and win.
The victory puts the RedHawks at 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference. They will be back at home next match on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they host Trinity Christian College.
