Hard Rock Northern Indiana Recap: RedHawks Draw 0-0 in Defensive Battle at Home Against Saint Xavier

CROWN POINT, Ind. – The Indiana University Northwest men's soccer team hosted Saint Xavier University Friday at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point, Indiana. Both squads entered the match in search of their first victory this season, and today's conference opener was an opportunity for each team to start fresh for CCAC play.

The Cougars seemed to have the edge in the first half as they outshot the RedHawks 6 to 2 but were unable to convert any of those opportunities. IUN had the best scoring chance of the first half when substitute junior midfielder Trevon Hamilton broke past the Cougar back line and played a pass to sophomore midfielder Luis Limones, who took a shot on net, but it was saved by Cougar goalkeeper Joel Estrada.

The second half was back and forth as well, with both teams having limited scoring opportunities. Limones led IUN in total shots with two and one shot on goal, while junior defender Jessie Cardiel led the Cougars with three total shots, including two shots on goal. As a team, the Cougars outshot the RedHawks 12 to 7.

Both defenses had an impressive showing, resulting in a clean sheet for both goalkeepers: Estrada for the Cougars and sophomore goalkeeper Gavin Niebel for the RedHawks.

Despite a strong effort from both squads, neither team was able to capitalize and score. The match ended in a 0-0 draw. With this result, the RedHawks' record moves to 0-8-1. They will look to get their first win of the season and in conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they are back at home in the Sparta Dome against Trinity Christian College.
