Johnson Leads the Way with 24 Points; Men's Basketball Drops One Against St. Xavier Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Three IU Northwest men's basketball players reached double figures with Jared Johnson leading the way with 24 points as the RedHawks dropped a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup against host St. Xavier Saturday. Marshaud Watkins scored 10 points and Martrellian Gibson also added 10 points in the setback Saturday.

HALF BREAKDOWN

1st Half (St. Xavier 38, IU Northwest 30)

  • SXU started the game with a three-pointer then Jared Johnson and Martrellian Gibson made back-to-back baskets to grab an early 4-3 lead.
  • Both teams were pretty much evenly matched in the first half until late. 
  • The Cougars would own the slight edge every time though and would not allow the RedHawks to take the lead until Johnson nailed a three-pointer to make it 16-15 IU Northwest with 10:58 left before the break. 
  • St. Xavier used a run to go ahead 29-23 with 5:21 to go. 
  • Larry Lynch and Johnson made consecutive buckets to cut it back down to two (29-27). 
  • Watkins would later make it 33-30 SXU before the Cougars scored the last five points of the half. 

2nd Half (St. Xavier 39, IU Northwest 31)

  • SXU opened the second half with back-to-back made baskets to grab a 42-30 lead.-€‹
  • Damond Crosby ended that drought with a layup to make it a 10-point game again.
  • The Cougars did not let up as St. Xavier after a 14-2 run made it 56-34.
  • The RedHawks tried to bounce back but the Cougars kept adding to their big lead as it stretched out to as much as 24.
  • IU Northwest looked to get back into it with a 9-3 run to make it 74-58 but it was too little too late.
  • Gibson had the last basket of the game for both sides as SXU won the contest 77-61.
