Men's Basketball Able to Hold Off Calumet College Wednesday

Whiting, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team against Calumet College of St. Joseph in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday. The RedHawks (14-11, 10-7 CCAC) against the Crimson Wave (7-17, 6-12 CCAC), 70-64, at the Rittenmeyer Center. 

IUN scored the first seven points of the game which was capped off by a three-pointer by Martellian Gibson (Rantoul, Ill.). However, Calumet College had the answer as the Crimson Wave scored 10 points in a row to take a 10-7 lead at the 14:56 mark in the first half. 

Both teams were trade leads and ties the rest of the first half. Gibson hit a huge three-pointer with two minutes left in the half to give the RedHawks a 33-31 lead at the break.

Calumet College came out of the gate strong in the second half scoring seven unanswered points to take a 38-33 lead with 15:36 to play. Chris Robinson (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) ended the drought with a layup to cut it to a three-point contest. 

The Crimson Wave went up 46-39 with 11:12 left in the contest. IUN made their run to fight back in the game as the RedHawks made it a two-point game after Rashad Richardson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff) hit a layup with 7:55 remaining. 

Nick Passino (Churbusco, Ind.) got the RedHawks back in the game again after making a jumpshot which also sparked an IUN run. After CCSJ scored a basket, to make it 55-53 in favor of the Wave, IUN went on a 10-2 run the next five minutes to make it 63-57 RedHawks with 36 seconds left.

CCSJ was still not going away without a fight. The Crimson Wave cut it to two-points (64-62) after converting a huge and-one play with 19 ticks left. 

IUN was able to secure the game from the free-throw line as the RedHawks made six in a row to close out the game. The Redhawks won the game 70-64.

Two players recorded double figures for the RedHawks and almost a third tonight. Gibson led the way with 21 of those points.

Passino had a breakout game for the RedHawks with his near double-double performance with nine points and nine rebounds. Richardson pitched in 12 points to round out the IUN leaders.

IUN returns to action Saturday, February 8 as the RedHawks host Saint Xavier at the Savannah Center starting at 3 p.m. CT.
