Richardson Leads 2nd Half Comeback Against Saint Ambrose Saturday

Davenport, Iowa -- The Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team came back from down double figures with 16 minutes to go to defeat Saint Ambrose in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game on the road Saturday. The RedHawks (16-12, 12-8 CCAC) defeated the Fighting Bees (15-13, 11-9 CCAC), 98-92, Saturday.

Both teams would trade early leads back-and-forth for the first 12 minutes of the game until Marshaud Watkins (Harvey, Ill.) hit a three-pointer and Tromon Weston (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a basket to make it 25-20 with 7:56 to go for their biggest lead in the half. 

SAU responded with six straight points to take a 26-25 lead at the 6:20 mark in the first half. Rashad Richardson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff) kept it a one-point contest (32-31) with 3:19 to play before the break then the Fighting Bees outscored the RedHawks 10-2 the rest of the half to go up 41-33. 

IUN tried to fight back into the game early in the second half but SAU would respond with baskets. Richardson and Martellian Gibson (Rantoul, Ill.) opened the second half scoring for the RedHawks. 

The Fighting Bees went up 10 with 16:27 left in the game but IUN made their come back. Richardson started the run after nailing back-to-back three pointers to make it 56-53 SAU with 14:17 remaining.

A couple minutes later, Gibson hit a clutch trifecta then Jamisen Smith (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) hit a jumper to give the RedHawks a 58-57 lead with 12:11 left. 

Both teams would be within striking distance of each other as it was 69-69 with 7:52 left in the game. Richardson hit a three-pointer, Smith converted the three-point play and Gibson got looks from Jason Peace (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Weston from downtown to give the RedHawks a 10-point lead which was their biggest of the game with 4:13 remaining. 

SAU would not go away as the Fighting Bees cut it to three (93-90) with under a minute left. Gibson put the game away after knocking down a pair of clutch free-throws and then next possession got a steal and slammed it down for a seven point lead.

IUN ended up winning the game 98-92. 

Four players recorded double digits for the RedHawks including Richardson's season-high 38 points along with nine rebounds. Gibson also had a huge game for IUN as the junior scored 22 points. 

Despite struggles from the field, Watkins was able to reach double figures and added 12 points. Weston had a near double-double off the bench as he scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. 

IUN returns to action for their final home regular season game Wednesday, February 19 as the RedHawks host No. 4 Olivet Nazarene starting at 7:30 p.m.  CT.
