Men's Basketball Picks Up Statement Win Against Calumet College Tuesday

Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team used a hot shooting night to pick up a huge Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory against Calumet College of St. Joseph Tuesday.

The RedHawks (5-3, 3-2 CCAC) defeated the Crimson Wave (3-6, 2-3 CCAC), 102-87, at the Savannah Center Tuesday.

The RedHawks shot 58.7% from the field in the game including 62.5% in the second half. 

Both teams traded leads and ties for the first 14 minutes of the first half. Marshaud Watkins (Harvey, Ill.) gave IUN some momentum with a three-pointer to give the RedHawks a 40-36 advantage with 5:12 left in the half.

Louis Williams (East Chicago, Ind./East Chicago Central) nailed a three-pointer to make it 44-39 which gave the RedHawks their biggest lead of the half. After a quick basket by CCSJ, Rashad Richardson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff) answered right back with a two-point jumper with 2:53 remaining in the first half.

CCSJ scored the last three points of the first half and held IUN off the scoreboard the final 2:53. IUN went into the break ahead 46-44.

The Crimson Wave opened the second half with a basket to tie the game at 46-all. The RedHawks took total control of the game after that made basket.

IUN went on a 14-4 run which was capped off by back-to-back threes by Richardson and Martellian Gibson (Rantoul, Ill.) which made it 60-50 with 17:25 left in the game. 

Calumet College would make runs to make it close but everytime IUN would bounce right back to swing momentum back in their favor. The Crimson Wave made it a 10-point game with 10:14 left.

The RedHawks then went on a 12-0 run to go ahead 86-64 with 6:06 left. A minute later, Gibson gave IUN their biggest lead of the night which was 23 with a jumper.

After Calumet College bounced back with a three-pointer, IUN got it right back after a trifecta from Jason Peace (Indianapolis, Ind.) which made it 93-73 under five minutes left.

Peace gave the RedHawks point No. 100 on the night after knocking down a jumpshot which made the score 100-85. IUN held on to win 102-87 for their second game this season scoring 100 points.

IUN had three players reach 20 or more points to lead the RedHawks in scoring. Gibson led all scorers with 27 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds.

Richardson recorded 24 points in the victory. Watkins also had an impressive game as the junior picked up 20 points on the night.

IUN Men's Basketball returns to action Tuesday, December 3 against Andrews University starting at 6 p.m. CT.
